Lake Tahoe Drink of the Week: Hard Rock Alpine Union’s Passion Fruit-Pineapple Margarita
One of the largest components of Tahoe’s nightlife is the mix of countless breweries, bars and restaurants that offer unique drinks difficult to find outside the basin.
In our Drink of the Week segment, we’ll showcase one type of beer, wine, cocktail — you name it — to try around the basin.
Does any drink scream summer more than a margarita? I mean, nobody dreams of sitting at the top of Heavenly in full nuke ready to take down a punchbowl-sized margarita. Well, there’s always that one guy, but he snorted crayon shavings as a kid, so…
While this cocktail has the name that might have you thinking summer, it’s more of a bro to the big M. Which is to say it’s more like a “play-ah” — you get the feeling, but you never get the full commitment.
Don’t get me wrong, though. It’s got all the feels of the classic libation.
Here, you get the full monty of Sauza tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, pineapple juice, and passion fruit puree, with a Tajin spice pasted around the rim.
The smell is clean and tingly like a spritzer and going down the ol’ blow hole, you get a nice two-step of the tequila and fruit. Although it’s faint, the passion fruit puree gives you just enough of a different taste to note it’s not your momma’s margarita.
Folklore says when you eat passion fruit, you’ll fall in love with the next person you see. It doesn’t say what happens when you mix it with alcohol and drink it, but if you haven’t tried it, throw caution to wind and give it a go.
It’s like the love child of like an orange, mango and a sour berry so perhaps that lucky threesome might carry over … to your taste buds, people, your taste buds.
The item that sends it over the top is the Tajin. It’s the salty/spicy ying to the sweet’s yang that really balances out this drink to perfection.
So while this concoction doesn’t exactly transport you to full summer blaze, it does plenty enough to tease the gray matter and make you wonder if you’ve started your workout regimen soon enough to fit into that new bathing suit.
