Lake Tahoe Drink of the Week: South Lake Brewing Company’s Haulin’ Oates(meal) Porter
One of the largest components of Tahoe’s nightlife is the mix of countless breweries, bars and restaurants that offer unique drinks difficult to find outside the basin. In our Drink of the Week segment, we’ll showcase one type of beer, wine, cocktail — you name it — to try around the basin.
In what may be one of the best names of a beer to come around in a while, this week’s drink asks you to dust off those ’80s rockin’ boots and enjoy SLBC’s Haulin’ Oates(meal) Porter.
While some people stay away from porters because their color is as dark as the heart of the Wicked Witch of the West, I can assure you this one doesn’t feel that way. Sure, it looks traditional in true porter color, but it’s not a “Maneater” like you might expect.
It does look manly, though — like a big bearded, ax-wielding, flannel-wearing machismo of a fella. However, this is more like a fleet-footed lumberjack that dances while chopping wood. Needless to say, it’s lighter than its looks will have you believe.

Described as having the flavors of oatmeal cookie, cocoa and raisin, I thought it also carried a little burnt marshmallow. Not the kind of burnt those sickos who completely engulf their marshmallows in flames while you’re camping then let it burn until the outer shell looks like the aftermath from the Stay Puff Marshmallow Man, but just a slight caramel-roast that adds to the gooiness of the mallow. You know, the only way to toast.
Clocking in at 7.6 percent ABV, you don’t have to rely on the old man’s money to cover too many rounds. A couple of these and you know it won’t matter anyway.
