Lake Valley Fire Protection District announces Adopt-a-Hydrant program

Gareth S. Harris, Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal

The winter months bring a special concern to the Lake Valley Fire Protection District.

Winter snowfall with the plowing of roads can often hide fire hydrants under a large amount of snow making them difficult to find quickly. In the event of a fire, firefighters have to locate and shovel out fire hydrants before hooking up to them.

Precious time may be lost. Please don’t let your neighborhood hydrant remain “undercover.”

The Lake Valley Fire Protection District is asking that you help us by keeping the fire hydrant closest to your residence or business clear of snow. We need a 3 foot clearance on all sides with a clear path out to the road. When shoveling snow, be aware of vehicle traffic. Do not stand in the street and be careful not to slip and fall out into the roadway.

Please keep the hydrant clean of snow during the winter months. In addition, keeping hydrants free of overgrowth (grass and weeds) the rest of the year helps to make our community safer. For more information, or to schedule a free fire safety inspection, contact the Lake Valley Fire Protection District at (530) 577-3737.
