After a slow start, the North Tahoe boys’ basketball team rallied to beat Whittell 49-43 in the Mount Rose League opener for both schools on Friday night in Tahoe City.

Whittell seized an 11-4 lead after one period, picking apart North Tahoe’s 2-3 zone defense. However, North Tahoe closed to 20-19 by halftime as Justin Blend hit a shot at the buzzer.

Brett Roberts’ three-point shot early in the fourth period gave North Tahoe the lead for good, and the Lakers built a 46-37 cushion with 1:37 left.

Senior Blake Heldt-Werle led Whittell with 14 points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists. Austin Neil, who scored two quick baskets in the first period, finished with 13 points. It was the sophomore’s first varsity game. Garrett Bronken contributed six points and five rebounds.

Whittell (3-7 overall) travels to South Tahoe on Tuesday in the first-ever meeting between the school’s varsity programs.
