Lawsuit challenges Nevada ‘personhood’ initiative

LAS VEGAS (AP) – A court challenge is being mounted to block an anti-abortion Nevada ballot initiative that would change the state constitution to define life as beginning at conception, and demand civil rights for unborn children.

A coalition including the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood Federation of America is backing six Nevada voters in a lawsuit filed Thursday in state court in Carson City. The suit seeks to stop an initiative drive launched last month by a group named Personhood Nevada.

The lawsuit seeks a declaration the initiative is invalid because it is overbroad and vague, and an injunction to stop it from being included on the November 2012 ballot.

The legal effort is similar to one that blocked a similarly worded measure from the 2010 ballot.
