Leadership Lake Tahoe project to collect books for Tahoe kids

The South Lake Tahoe Children’s Book Drive, a group project through the Leadership Lake Tahoe Program, continues through April 1.

The book drive is being conducted in conjunction with the National Library Week and National School Library Month

New and slightly used children’s books are being collected to help promote reading for children by putting books into the hands of youth from birth to 16 who reside on the south shore of Lake Tahoe (Douglas, Carson, and El Dorado Counties).

Books drop off locations are: The Women’s Center, El Dorado County Library, Choices for Children, El Dorado County Superior Court, Tahoe Turning Point, TRPA, Heavenly Mountain Resort HR Department, Round Hill General Improvement District, Kahle Community Center, and Barton Memorial Hospital. Book collection boxes are already in place and will remain at these locations throughout the month of March.

All books collected will be distributed to children on the South Shore who are in need. Distribution events will take place in April with the assistance of partner agencies such as Kahle Community Center, Lake Tahoe Unified School District, and Choices for Children.

Leadership Lake Tahoe, a program sponsored through the Chamber of Commerce, began in 2003 with a mission of identifying and developing current and future leaders through a comprehensive program designed to increase knowledge and awareness of the issues and challenges facing our community.

The program is an intensive 10-month experience to provide information, strategies, contacts, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

As part of the leadership program, members work in teams and develop a project to benefit the South Lake Tahoe region. The Children’s Book Drive Team members are made up of David Landry (TRPA), Peter Lavallee (STPUD), Nick Exline (Midkiff and Associates), Shelly Stalter (Barton Health) and Darcie Carpenter (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics).

The team can be contacted at Groupfor2012@gmail.com or on the Facebook page: Goupie Fourberg and South Lake Tahoe Children’s Book Drive.
