Letter — Explaining how taxes are paid

Let’s put the tax cuts in terms everyone can understand.

Ten men go to dinner weekly. If the bill was paid the way we pay our taxes, the first four men pay nothing, the fifth pays $1, the sixth pays $3, the seventh pays $7, the eighth pays $12, the ninth pays $18. The 10th (the richest ) pays $59.

The resturant owner realizing these 10 men as good customers decides to give them a 20 percent discount on future dinners. Twenty dollars divided by 6, since the first four pay nothing, is $3.33 apiece. But if they subtract that from the six men’s share, the fifth and sixth men get paid to have dinner. The owner decided to break down the $20 as to the same percentage as is being paid by each.

The first five men now pay nothing. The sixth pays $2, the seventh $5, the eighth $9, the ninth $12 and the tenth $52 down from $59, saving him $7.

Outside the resturant, the men start to compare their savings — the sixth man complained he only got $1, the first five got nothing but complained that the 10th man got $7. They jumped the 10th man and beat him up.

The next month the tenth man didn’t show up for dinner.

When it came to pay the bill, they were $52 short.

So boys, girls and college professors, that is how the American tax system works.

The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax cut. They also supply jobs and spend money. Tax them too much, attack them for their achievements, and they may not show up at the table any more!
