Letter — It’s called satire

On Jan. 17 I read with an equal amount of amusment and dismay a letter aplauding my anti-fishing letter in support of “our gilled brethren” after the “murder” of “Sally the bear.”

I had hoped that my humor and sarcasm would have been an effective tool, but I suppose I was naive. Actually, it is my observation that the more affluent a community is, the more likely it will start naming bears and fish and disregarding the welfare of the aged, youth, and its otherwise less affluent members.

Perhaps when people become more successful and carefree they regress to more idealistic attitudes of their youth. Maybe concentrating on a bear named “Sally” relieves them from thinking of real Sallys who are, say, ruined by mounting medical bills and no medical insurance. And yes, I’ve hunted and fished, just like that bear. “Rocky, Thumper, Porky and Bambi” have all met their fate at my hand. So in the future, please, don’t believe everything you read, OK?
