Letter: Support vision for national parks & forests
Can you imagine what the Sierra Nevada might look like if our nation hadn’t had the vision to set aside our national parks and forests? Would the Pacific Crest Trail experience be as dramatic and life-changing without its wilderness areas? Many of our public lands would not be what they are today without the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), a government program that actually works!
Land and Water Conservation Fund takes money from oil and gas royalties — meaning our tax dollars don’t pay for it — and invests them in not only federal conservation programs but also local parks and playgrounds, baseball diamonds, wildlife refuges, working forests, expanding access for hunters and anglers, protecting water quality, and drinking water like Lake Tahoe.
This is one of our most successful government programs, but it is in danger of expiring on Sept. 30 because of Washington, D.C. gridlock. We need Congress to reauthorize the program if it is going to keep improving our quality of life. Please take a moment to contact your elected officials, and ask them to do the right thing and reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
