LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Constructive criticism
Your front page story by Matthew Renda was a good one. You failed to use the business model of Mr. Les Wright of South Lake Tahoe as an excellent example of a possible new economic driver for the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Mr. Wright, of his own volition, developed the Lake Tahoe Marathon that has become a significant draw for people to the basin. The marathon has evolved to be an activity that far exceeds the interests of just runners. For that reason, Mr. Wright’s enterprise should be studied as a prime example of what can be done in this basin to develop successful businesses that do not revolve around gaming. The possibilities are endless: kayak regattas, kite-flying contests, Thai dragon boat races, Hawaiian outrigger races, running races over mountain trails, photo contests on a given day. The list of possibilities is endless. Thank you, Mr. Wright, for your creativity in showing the rest of us what can be done with some ingenuity.
Jack Hagerman,
South Lake Tahoe
