LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Finishing the job early should be enough of a bonus
In regards to Dylan Silver’s article in the May 21 issue, “Echo Summit could open Saturday,” good job to the contractor C.C. Meyers. What I also find interesting is the fact that C.C. Meyers bid this job and was able to complete the project several days early. For a contractor to be able to accomplish this is a plus for him and a bonus besides. That’s what a contractor tries to accomplish. Good for him! Now, what I have an issue with is that Caltrans offered C.C. Meyers another $150,000 dollars. It’s our way of saying “atta boy” to C.C. Meyers. It could be up to $600,000 for your speed. Do we get from this that this is true for all government projects? Should we use this same example for what our kids do? Something does not seem right here. I truly have my doubts, if this happens, that the workerbees will ever be a part of the bonus. When you are the low bidder and match all the requirements specified, that is your first bonus. If you finish ahead of schedule, that is your bonus. Just some thought.
