LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Flea market closing

As long-time (13 years) residents of the Elks Club Drive area and 30-year Tahoe residents, we are not happy with the prospect of the former Elks Lodge property becoming an eyesore with piles of excavated dirt and equipment for the next five years because of the the river restoration project. What a welcoming sight for our tourists! We also remember when that property was flooded in 1997 and wonder if it is even legal to pile dirt in a hundred-year floodplain and risk polluting the river with sediment. Why not dump it out of sight at the Sunset Stables, which provides a safer place due to higher ground and is easily accessible? To kick the Flea Market out of Tahoe is like taking away an institution that is known for its friendly, welcoming attitude toward locals who gather to see each other and tourists who enjoy a bit of Tahoe.
