Letter to the editor: It’s time to take back our neighborhoods

In response to the comments by Cal Orey about dogs off leash: I’d like to present a few more thoughts and comments on the subject of dogs in South Lake Tahoe neighborhoods. We live on a street that has been forever changed because of all the irresponsable dog owners that live here. From viscious dogs that attack people at the wire fence line, dogs that bark at everything that goes by as they are staked out every day and forgotten by their owners, dogs that are left outside at night and bark all night long to the dogs that are unleashed and allowed to run into people’s yards and leave their messes in the wake of their journey while their owners say to me that “they are nice and it’s OK,” I think it’s time for those of us who are impacted by these irresponsible people to take back our neighborhoods. There are laws that are in place to help curtail the bad behaviors of irresponsable people and their pets that choose to not follow the local animal control laws. I have had mixed results with calling animal control about the above issues; usually they say they have to catch the animal “in the act,” which we know is about impossible. If you become a frequent caller and have address of the problem neighbors and you set up an ongoing communication with animal control, there is usually a better response from them. It’s your right to call them and, as a property owner, you pay taxes for these services so call animal control and take back your neighborhood. And to the dog owners who do clean up after your dogs and have them on leashes, thank you.
