LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Keep malleable minds sober when ice skating

The publicly owned ice skating rink has applied for a liquor license. Granting a license to the rink is a bad idea.

A number of years ago I skated at the Santa Clarita ice rink. It used to have a phenomenal figure skating program. Then the rink began to sell alcohol. There was a blinking Budweiser sign in the window of the second floor restaurant so that anybody skating on their main sheet of ice would see it. After that, many of the high school age figure skaters started to fall down repeatedly and eventually quit their sport.

I have even met hockey players who quit their sport as soon as they reached the age of 21. Trying to maintain your balance on a thin sliver of metal is hard enough without having any alcohol in your system. Even a tiny amount of alcohol in your system is enough to make you fall down while executing a maneuver that you have successfully done a thousand times before.

I think advertising the sale of alcohol at an institution that predominantly caters to our youth conveys the idea to these young malleable minds that ice skating and drinking are an acceptable combination, when the opposite is true.
