Letter to the editor- No time to slam agency

Susan Codeglia
Zephyr Cove

I am compelled to respond to David McCune’s letter in the paper this morning. I refer to his slam on our very own Forest Service and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, wherein he suggested we send them to New York and Washington, D.C. “to help clean up the mess because it’s not like they’re doing anything else.”

What a hateful and unproductive statement. Isn’t it easy for people to lash out rather than hold their tongue? Mr. McCune did not use this paper’s forum to solicit a dignified and intelligent solution to the problem. No, he used it as an opportunity to bash local government on behalf of his own agenda. This is particularly offensive at this time of national tragedy when we, as a nation and as a small community, have an obligation to come together in unity with love, dignity and courage in our hearts. How ironic that Steve Goldman’s letter on the very same page mentioned the Buddhist principle of “right speech” (using words to help, not harm). Buddha’s words in the Dhammapada say, “Better than a meaningless story of a thousand words is a single word of deep meaning which, when heard, produces peace.” Mr. McCune’s hateful and defamatory statement does nothing for the cause.
