Letter to the editor: Planning agency’s system is like the Leaning Tower of Pisa

If our planning agency believes that a Best Management Practices compliance certificate is the holy grail to saving Lake Tahoe, then they must also believe that you can take an accurate census by counting only birth certificates. It is my opinion that every infiltration trench installed has a half-life of effectiveness; that is, I believe that it is possible to have a 100-percent compliance record with a near net-zero result.

If our planning agency consultant’s model for suspended sediments shows a net reduction of 251,336 tons of sediment per year, as reported in the May 16-31 Tahoe Business Monitor, then I expect that its model fails to include the half-life of the projected containment systems installed.

Wouldn’t be funny if, in the future, our planning agency found that an area-wide containment system was a better and less costly system to infiltrate our storm water. The system proposed won’t last and will cost about 100 million dollars to install. Back-pats for everyone and for all!

It is my opinion that the system placed by our planning agency is similar to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The foundation has shifted unexpectedly, but our planning agency thinks it wise to continue to stack layer upon layer in an attempt to correct for the original error. It didn’t work in year of 1173, and I don’t believe it works now.
