Letter to the editor: Please keep dogs retrained when others are around

After reading the letter about dogs in the disc park, I want to chime in. Kudos and hats off to all dog owners who, over the years, I have met on the trail who have taken a few seconds to restrain their dogs to let me run or cycle past without having to address their pet, for better or worse. I have had many meetings with unrestrained dogs, from their total indifference to me, to jumping on me with sharp claws – I can sew up that tear in my clothes when I get home – to actual bites. These owners inevitably say “He’s OK, just friendly,” or “She never did that before!” Our pets take their cues from their owners; a jogger or cyclist is pretty easy to tell from a threat to another person. Not always so for a dog. Please restrain your pet for the 30 seconds or less it takes us to pass, so we can all actually “Have a good day!” Thanks.
