LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Returning to nature, not destroying it

This is in response to Debbie Mason’s letter regarding fuel reduction destroying nature’s beauty.

We, the human race, have altered our environment … almost to the point of no return. We’ve suppressed fires, planted non-native species, changed river courses, and even negatively impacted the weather. All this because our human ego says “we know best.” Fire is a part of nature. When we take it out of the equation, we do harm. The Native Americans knew this. They let lightening strikes burn without stopping them and often did a form of prescribed burns when needed.

The law (4291 of the Public Resources Code) requires individual homeowners to have defensible space. It only makes sense that the government-owned properties – county, state and federal – are cleared in the same manner so that our homes are protected as much as possible.

We have three choices: Let the forest go so it’s a tinderbox of incredible proportions, leave the planet, or assist nature with fuel reduction. It’s our choice. The forest will survive and thrive with fuels-reduction measures. As our community comes back from the Angora fire, my choice is clear. How about you?
