LETTER TO THE EDITOR: TRPA’s boat fees are a form of legalized racketeering
July 2, 2010
We are frequent vacationers at Lake Tahoe, property owners and boaters. This year we were charged $40 to launch our boat on Lake Tahoe.
The boat had a “mussel inspection seal” on it from last year, yet we were assessed a $40 charge for no additional purpose.
This is not about $40, this about the absence of principles behind the thinking that led to this assessment.
What this really represents is legalized racketeering. Racketeering is the act of operating an illegal business or scheme in order to make a profit, perpetrated by a structured group.
As I understand it, the structured group in this case is TRPA.
Taxes, fees and assessments are a necessary component of functioning society.

However, it is also incumbent upon such government entities to provide certain services in exchange for the assessments they levy.
In the absence of providing services to society, it becomes legalized racketeering.
