LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Turn Tahoe economy around by hiring locally

As a longtime local, I applaud the effort to help our economy by promoting local shopping.

Local hiring of Tahoe residents remains a vital component of this effort. All our local employers should redouble their efforts to hire workers workers who live here at the lake. With a regional unemployment rate already off the chart, and an underemployment situation crippling our local citizenry, everyone needs to be part of this effort.

We can all help. Plan to hire our local repairmen and contractors, no matter what the job. Hire our local American citizens. Business, government and private employers all need to look to recruit from our local labor pool.

For locals, the most offensive practice is the use of “seasonal contract” workers from other countries. Often they displace local “on-call” workers, because employers have to fill their contract hourly requirements first. Many are here from “tax treaty” nations, and pay no federal tax! Hence, they take home more money than our local workers and suppress prevailing free market wages as well. This all happens even though they have poorer cultural and linguistic skills than our local labor force.

An often heard excuse is “we can’t find Americans who will work these jobs.” We all know this really means: “We don’t want to pay prevailing wages, or even a fair wage.” But if we all make an effort to keep both shopping and hiring in town, not only will our local economy grow, but our sense of community will grow as well.

Go Tahoe!
