LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Unfair rental practices in dream town

I was born and raised in South Shore and now that I have children, I would love to come back home to raise them in a place that is near and dear to my heart. Where a quality of life surpasses everything in the big city.

Unfortunately, I have just about given up on that idea and the reality of my goal has become a dream.

I would think that homeowners would want a stable family with a strong rental history and income to live in their homes. My husband is Refrigeration, Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning certified and works on housing rehab projects. We don’t drink, smoke or engage in any drama. Sadly, that does not seem to be the case. Tahoe has become anti-family.

I’ve contacted countless homeowners regarding their two- and three-bedroom homes listed for rent. Time and time again I am told that my kids would make too much noise (a 7 and 9 year old) or that the house would be too small for my family. My favorite is the woman who told me she can only rent to adults because the stairs are too steep for children. All of these statements are illegal and are in violation of State and Federal Fair Housing Laws.

If I do find a homeowner willing to rent, their rent is so overpriced for the Tahoe area that I fear we wont be able to afford it in the slow seasons. Bay Area homeowners are charging steep rents in a town where the average rate of pay is minimum wage. It may be their right to charge as they see fit, but ideally it’s an unfair practice.

Ashamed of what has become…
