Letter to the editor: Vote no on Measure B
The article in the May 25 paper regarding the business license increase is a testament to the mentality of the mayor and City Council. To suggest that those retailers in this community who are major employers and collect the lion’s share of the sales tax should be penalized on the pretense that small businesses will see their business license fees reduced is tragic. The 5 percent reduction that small businesses will realize is hardly worth mentioning compared to what the consumer in this community will pay in hidden costs. It isn’t a secret as to how much of our commerce has been diverted to the Nevada retailers and that will continue as long as the City Council fails to understand the consequences of this sort of narrow-minded decision-making. The City Council should know that business license fees in jurisdictions within our region charge little or no business license fees. For example, in El Dorado County the maximum business license fee is $32, with some exceptions. In Douglas County there are no business license fees and Placer County fees are nominal. The best message that this community could send to the City Council is for this measure to fail. Vote no on Mesaure B.
