LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Waiting for the bus

I am writing in regards to the enormous joke that is our public transportation system.

BlueGO, “Tahoe’s smooth moving shuttle,” is by far the worst public transportation program I have ever experienced. I am part of a large group of South Tahoe residents who depend heavily upon public transportation to get them to and from their destinations. The reality that I cannot reliably get to and from work, class, or the grocery store, due to the poor functionality of BlueGO, is something I, and many others like me, have been dealing with for a long time.

I have been skipped at bus stops no less than a dozen times. I’ve waited for the bus up to an hour past the scheduled times. I’ve witnessed bus drivers ignore stops, wave away passengers, and randomly declare that certain stops are no longer stops at all. I have been misinformed repeatedly by BlueGO representatives, both by drivers and on the phone, as well as by their printed schedules. One representative even told me that, “scheduling isn’t our problem.” I fail to understand how scheduling isn’t a bus systems problem – isn’t that essentially the entire goal of a bus route?

What kind of bus system shuts down its main route (the 50) at 7:45 p.m.? What kind of bus system has operators and drivers who seem utterly clueless to nearly everything going on with the routes, schedules, stops, and each other? I realize that funding has been severely cut back, but you would think that with every route running only once an hour they would be able to do so smoothly. But I guess, like Paul from the BlueGO hot line so sweetly informed me, it’s not really their problem.
