I am more than a little puzzled when I read that opposition to health care reform is strongest among those of us who are seniors. One might think that we had learned something in all these years and that we would see our government administered Medicare as an example of what may be accomplished with universal coverage. And certainly many of us have horror stories to tell about the current system of health care in this country, as I do.

So let’s start using our heads and put foolish fears of change behind us. President Obama is proposing an essential step toward reforming a system that serves no one well, other than the big insurance companies. Let’s let Congress know that we want health care reform now for our children and our children’s children.

I am only 69 years old, but I did kind of tire myself out earlier this month working all day bucking logs with a chain saw, moving the wood across the street to my property, and stacking it. Just because I left some cut pieces right across the road from my house to move the next day doesn’t mean they were abandoned and free for the taking. We had paid the Forest Service for the permit to cut the firewood so it belonged to us. The fact that you come around in the middle of the night to take the wood means that you knew that it was stealing. Or maybe you were just trying to emulate the federal government by taking something from somebody who worked hard, to give it to some lazy bum who couldn’t be bothered to get off his butt and do something for himself.
