License renewal due

The sun is quickly setting on hunting and fishing fun for 2000-01.

The 2001-02 season will begin March 1, and Nevada licenses are available now.

Nevada Division of Wildlife officials estimate close to 200,000 licenses will be purchased in Nevada this year.

“We’re one of the few states that show an increase in licenses,” said NDOW spokesman David Rice. “We’re thrilled with that.”

Rice didn’t know how many people are caught hunting and fishing without a license every year, but he said people shouldn’t risk it.

Hunting and fishing licenses for Nevada residents are $39, compared to the minimum $50 fine for those caught without a license.

“Most violations involve fishing without a license,” Rice said. “Ninety to 95 percent of the time the warden will issue a citation.”

Rice said anglers can face a gross misdemeanor charge warranting six months in jail and a $2,000 fine for fishing without a license.

Hunting big game, like elk and deer, requires a special tag that is issued by a random drawing. Rice said out of about 85,000 applicants only 20,000 to 30,000 people are lucky enough to be granted a tag.

People who like to catch trout and duck are also required to apply for special stamps in addition to the regular licenses.

Rice said most hunting seasons start in October and the most popular catches are mule deer and upland birds such as the chukar.
