Lira’s celebrates grand opening

Lira’s supermarket is throwing a grand opening Friday.

The Meyers market, which opened in December in front of the Tahoe Paradise Golf Course, put its ceremonial celebration on hold until spring rolled around to take advantage of the more favorable weather for a party, owner Jim Lira said Wednesday from his Rio Vista, Calif., store.

The store “opened quietly” with customer handouts, Manager Steve Parker said.

Lira will host an outdoor barbecue, activities for children including characters in costume and a ribbon cutting at noon.

The store resulted from a $3 million project that took two and a half years to bring to fruition. It was the first one Lira had built.

He worked at the Rio Vista store for 27 years before taking over that store in 1991.

Come summer, Lira hopes the store will get a second wind in business.

“With our projections, it’s been pretty soft. I thought we would get more local people. We’re right there. They have to go 10 to 12 miles (to shop elsewhere),” he said.

Lira believes the slow business has not resulted from Safeway’s recent opening of its larger store in town on Johnson Lane.

“We’re hanging in there. It takes time, and we have to earn their trust,” he said.

The store offers more than 30,000 different items, including fresh fish as well as a variety of beef and poultry.
