Lira’s market to open Wednesday

Emily Aughinbaugh, Tribune staff writer

Meyers residents will soon be able to choose from an assortment of holiday hams, turkeys and prime ribs at the new Lira’s Market.

The market, located in front of Tahoe Paradise Golf Course, is scheduled to open Wednesday, and owner Jim Lira could not be happier.

“Everybody’s so excited here and getting (the store) all dressed up,” Lira said. “We invite everyone to come out and see what we’ve done here.”

The $3 million, 13,000 square foot market will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. everyday.

Lira said there will be food sampling on Wednesday, but a big grand opening party is scheduled for January once the store has been operational for awhile.

Lira’s Market will offer close to 34,000 different items, which Lira said is more than the big chain stores stock.

The market will sell fresh fish from the same distributor that sells to the casinos and the Fresh Ketch restaurant, along with a variety of California wines, which Lira said are popular at his other store in Rio Vista, Calif.

The market will also offer a variety of beef, pork and poultry, including restaurant-aged meats.

Lira employed 40 local residents to run the store and said 99 percent of the construction was done by Tahoe contractors.

“All the local subcontractors have done a great job,” Lira said. “I don’t think you’ll find anything like this in any supermarket.”
