Local educators fear for financial turmoil

South Lake Tahoe education officials will anxiously be paying attention to today’s meeting when Gov. Gray Davis is expected to announce his plan for $10 billion worth of cuts to offset the state deficit.

“We need to wait and see what Gov. Davis has in mind and the Legislature has in mind,” said Lori Gaskin, vice president of academic affairs at Lake Tahoe Community College. “It’s premature to think the sky is falling and we’ll be facing significant challenges until we know where the debate is leading.”

Gaskin and Diane Scheerhorn, superintendent for Lake Tahoe Unified School District, are concerned with possible mid-year budget slices.

Scheerhorn and other district officials spent the weekend in San Francisco at a California School Board Association conference. The state budget was a priority topic of conversation.

Scheerhorn said she is on “pins and needles” because of the budget and how the current and long-term cuts will affect the district’s money woes.

Gaskin said the college’s multimillion dollar library project will not be influenced by the outcome of today’s meeting but is aware that lean times are in the forecast.

“I’ve been in this profession long enough to know the future ahead will be very different from years behind, but we can cope,” she said. “It’s just not how we like to provide education.”
