Two South Lake Tahoe Girl Scouts were among seven girls honored at the All That Glitters Awards Ceremony May 4 in Reno.

The girls were recognized for earning the highest awards in Girl Scouting during the past year, according to a press release. Seven girls received a Gold Award, 24 received a Silver Award and 128 received a Bronze Award during the ceremony, which was held at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.

The prestigious Gold Award is the single most demanding award that a Girl Scout can earn. Leadership, determination, perseverance and creativity — skills developed through the progressing levels of the Girl Scout program — are necessary for the successful completion of the project, the release stated. The essence of the Gold Award is a personal challenge requiring a girl to stretch her skills and abilities and step forward as a leader to meet a community need for which she has a passion and will to create a sustainable change.

Kate Albrecht and Rose Campion from South Lake Tahoe, Helen Bansen from Truckee, and Lauren Cromer, Nicole Dobrovolny, Nicole Glynn and Victoria McCrea from Sparks all received a Gold Award. Each project demonstrated the girls’ diverse interests and represented 80-150 hours of service to her community.

Albrecht used her personal story to increase the public’s awareness of childhood cancer through her project “Chemotherapy Bears.” Campion chose to advocate for music education in schools throughout the region by creating a “South Tahoe High School Brass Ensemble” that has and continues to perform at various community events.

Between 5 and 6 percent of eligible Girl Scouts earn the Gold Award each year.
