Local riders shine at national competition

South Shore BMX riders Dakota Baca, Hunter Martinez, Travis Wood and Patty Metzger combined for four first-place finishes and five other top-4 finishes at the American Bicycle Association Southwest Nationals July 14-16 in Las Vegas.

Baca had two first-place finishes in the 9 intermediate division and another first-place finish in the 9-10 open class division. Martinez placed second in the 6 intermediate division and first in the 6 mixed open division.

Wood, meanwhile, had two fourth-place finishes in the 13 novice division. Metzger placed second and third, respectively, in the 36-40 women’s cruiser division.

The event attracted more than 1,000 riders and was one of 26 on the U.S. National circuit. The next national event on the west coast is scheduled for Sept. 1-3 at the Reno Livestock Events Center. South Lake Tahoe BMX will be sending about 20 riders to that event.
