Local students are on their way

Each month of the school year, Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra recognizes students who are working hard to improve their literacy skills. In May, Casia Hancock, a fifth-grade student at Tahoe Montessori School and Anisha Patel, a fifth grade student at St. Teresa School were selected for the On Your Way awards. Each award recipient receives a certificate as well as a $25 gift certificate to a local book store.

Casia Hancock’s teacher, Susan Ward, said that Casia “has made a tremendous effort to improve her reading by reading at home every day. With support of her family she has made steady progress and has come to enjoy reading for pleasure, especially biographies.” Casia’s favorite book is “The Chronicles of Narnia.” When asked what she likes about reading, Casia replied, “I like to read because the more you read, the more you get the story, and then the more you like to read.”

Anisha Patel’s teacher, Ms. Arrington, nominated her because “she always tries to do her best and really wants to learn. She is always asking for help and comes in for extra help as much as possible.” Anisha likes working to figure out words and says, “I love improving my skills.” She has been doing just that while reading her favorite book, “Island of the Blue Dolphins.”
