For the second time this winter, skaters from around the area had an opportunity to perform with Olympic champion Peggy Fleming. On Jan. 15, Resort at Squaw Creek held an exhibition with an opening act choreographed by Leigh-Ellen Yarbrough, skate school director for the South Tahoe Ice Arena. Squaw Valley was celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Squaw Valley Olympics and held a 10-day Olympic heritage celebration.

“With the 2010 Winter Olympic Games (in February), this was a great opportunity for the skaters to meet Peggy and to dream about being an Olympic champion,” Yarbrough said.

“This was an amazing opportunity as chances like this, to skate with an Olympic champion, don’t come very often, if ever,” she added. “Peggy Fleming’s grace, courage and strength have encouraged so many young skaters.”

The South Tahoe Ice Arena will be holding several pre-Olympic informative sessions, which are free and open to the public. For more information about ice skating or other pre-Olympic events, visit http://www.recreationintahoe.com or call (530) 542-6262.
