5 apps for Lake Tahoe locals (and tourists)
The world’s at your fingertips thanks to the advent of smartphones — and now so is easy access to information on Tahoe’s vast array of outdoor activities thanks to these apps. Read on for Tahoe Daily Tribune’s five app picks for the Tahoe local (and visitor, too).
Autumn — AKA locals’ summer — is arguably the best time of year to hit the trails. So instead of carrying a bulky guidebook, grab your smartphone and download AllTrails. The hikers’ app features over 50,000 trails all over North America, including reviews, photos, descriptions and directions to the trailhead.
You’re sitting in the office. It’s Friday afternoon, and all you can think about is hitting the slopes tomorrow morning. If you could just see the forecast, maybe — just maybe — you could make it through the day. OpenSnow to the rescue. This app allows you to read analysis from local forecasters, compare your favorite resorts on one screen, and setup custom alerts for forecasts and snow reports.
Bundle up, grab that special someone — plus a drink or two — and head outside tonight for some stargazing. With StarWalk 2, you and your boo can hold your smartphone to the sky to get a view of stars, satellites, meteor showers and planets in real time. Learn the names of the 88 officially recognized constellations while you’re at it.
Vail Resort’s app lets you track vertical distance, compare lift line times, check mountain web cams, access resort maps and more from 10 of its ski destinations — including Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood. If you’re feeling competitive, take friends on in challenges and earn pins along the way.
Don’t break the bank with full-price lift tickets this winter. Though Liftopia does supply local snow and ski reports, the app’s best use comes from the lift ticket discount finder. You can safely purchase life tickets from more than 150 ski areas directly from the app. Win-win.
