Boxes full of food and entertainment were packed up tight at the American Legion in South Lake Tahoe on Thursday, with the intention of being sent overseas to those serving their country away from home.

U.S. soldiers will soon receive the gift boxes, which contain a variety of snacks and supplies provided by several businesses and organizations around town. Beef jerky, playing cards, candy and toothbrushes were among the items included in each package.

Carol Olivas, president of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, said the purpose of the project is to provide much-desired supplies to troops while they’re away.

“Anything that can kind of take the stress off where they are and what they are doing for all of us here,” she said.

Several hundreds of dollars was used to buy the supplies being shipped to soldiers. For anyone wishing to donate items or money, contact the American Legion at (530) 541-8788.
