Barton launches tool for patients to access medical records online
Barton Memorial Hospital is rolling out a program called MyChart that offers patients online, around-the-clock access to their medical information and health care providers.
“We think it’s going to be such a great benefit for patients, both for inpatient and outpatient,” said Leanne Wagoner, interim director of public relations for Barton Memorial Hospital.
“The nice thing about this, it’s almost like 24-hour access to the physician’s office,” Wagoner said. “It’s really great for access, not only for locals, but also for visiting patients.”
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandated implementation of electronic medical records.
Barton Memorial Hospital partnered with Renown Medical Center in Reno to implement Epic Systems’ software platform for electronic medical records, which offers MyChart as an added service.
Barton has been working to implement the MyChart program for months. The program is being rolled out this month and can now be accessed on the hospital’s website or through a special app for smartphones.
With the online tool, patients can access their medical records and lab results; schedule or change medical appointments; email their physician’s office securely and privately with non-urgent questions; and get email updates and appointment reminders.
MyChart complies with all medical privacy laws and is secure and only accessible to patients 18 or older and their health care providers, hospital officials said.
“MyChart helps patients stay proactive and educated about their own health,” Dr. Allison Steinmetz, a physician with Barton Family Medicine, said in a press release about the program.
“It enables access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It doesn’t replace that personal touch patients find in our offices and with our physicians, but it does offer patients more access to their records and physicians.”
Participation in the MyChart program is voluntary and comes at no additional cost for patients. All patients who visit Barton Memorial Hospital or its medical offices will get a MyChart login and access code. Past patients can also sign up for the program, which has been updated with all of their electronic medical records.
