Pedestrian struck and killed on Highway 50

Tribune staff report

An unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene of a traffic collision on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe after he was struck by an SUV around 8 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

Police officers and medics arrived to find the victim lying in the driveway of the Town and Country shopping center, located at 2660 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

The man appeared to be in his 40s and was wearing dark clothing. He had no identification on his person and no one matching his description has yet been reported missing, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Brian Williams.

According to Williams, the investigation thus far has revealed the 19-year-old driver of the SUV, Uriel Ortiz, was not under the influence of any substance and appeared to be driving at or under the posted speed limit as he traveled eastbound on Lake Tahoe Boulevard at the time of the collision.

There is no crosswalk permitting pedestrian crossing of Lake Tahoe Boulevard in the immediate area of the collision, Williams said.

No arrests or citations have been generated in this case. The incident remains under investigation and officers are trying to confirm which direction the man was walking before he was struck.

Witnesses are asked to call Detective Doug Sentell at 530-542-6100 in reference to case number 1401-0106.
