Everyone, 18 years of age and older, is invited to the Saturday Night Bingo at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center on April 5. Early bird games begin at 5:30 p.m. and regular games at 6 p.m.

Sierra Front to host inter-agency exercise

Sierra Front Wildland Fire Cooperators will host a regional wildland fire sand table exercise from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at the Douglas County Fairgrounds, located at 920 Dump Road, Gardnerville.

The event is designed to exercise inter-agency involvement during a large scale disaster utilizing the federally mandated National Incident Management System. The event will put senior ranking fire and law enforcement personnel in a position to manage a simulated large-scale wildland fire.

The exercise is designed to provide overall incident management skills to key staff operating within the Incident Command System.

Numerous public safety agencies will participate in the event from all over the Sierra Front, in addition to the public utility companies and county officials and agencies.

The planned scenario will simulate a typical incident along the Sierra Front and challenge local responders to manage the incident.

‘HAPPY’ comes to North Shore

“Happy” comes to the Center for Spiritual Living Tahoe-Truckee at 6 p.m. Sunday. “Happy” — the latest film from Academy Award nominated director, Roko Belic — takes a journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the slums of Kolkata in search of what really makes people happy. Combining real life stories of people from around the world and powerful interviews with the leading scientists in happiness research, the film explores the secrets behind our most valued emotion.

A short discussion will follow the movie. Donations accepted.

“Happy” is presented as part of the Center for Spiritual Living’s Inspirational Cinema program, which continues on the third Sunday of every month through June: March 23, April 27, May 18, and June 22.

Grand opening for affordable housing project rescheduled

The grand opening for The Aspens at South Lake Tahoe affordable housing project has been rescheduled for 3 p.m. March 27.

The Aspens at South Lake Tahoe is located at 3521 Pioneer Trail at Ski Run Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe. The smoke-free community offers one, two and three-bedroom, energy-efficient affordable living units for qualified low income renters. Apartments range in size from 561 square feet for a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit to 1,181 square feet for the largest three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit. Six Mental Health Services Act units are also available at the site. Apartment homes come equipped with washer/dryer hook-ups, dishwasher, refrigerator, gas stove, garbage disposal, and central heating and air.

March dance party scheduled at Senior Center

Everyone, of all ages, is invited to a St. Patrick’s Dance from 7:30-10 p.m. March 28 at the South Lake Tahoe Senior Center, 3050 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The 17-piece Tahoe Dance Band will play a variety of music for listening and dancing. Partners are optional, as is wearing green.

Included in the $10 admission are appetizers, desserts, beverages and a door prize ticket. Those under 21 years of age pay only $5. A raffle will also be conducted.

Presentation peers into Tahoe’s clarity

Dr. Alan Heyvaert of the Desert Research Institute will present research findings and recommendations that address Lake Tahoe’s aquatic nearshore environment at a public lecture at 6 p.m. April 3, hosted by the U.C. Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center. A no-host bar at 5:30 p.m. precedes the presentation.

Suggested donation is $5. The Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences is located 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village (on the campus of Sierra Nevada College).

Lake Tahoe’s nearshore is an important zone of relatively shallow water where the lake meets the land. The nearshore environment is inherently complex and vulnerable to aquatic invasive species, warming from climate change, recreation, development, and changes in lake levels. Conditions differ widely around the lake’s nearshore, in contrast to the more uniform open waters.

The “Lake Tahoe Nearshore Evaluation and Monitoring Framework” report examines the unique aspects of this important zone. The report evaluates existing California, Nevada and TRPA standards and thresholds related to this region; presents a new conceptual model for evaluating nearshore environmental health; and proposes a monitoring strategy intended to help resource managers identify the most meaningful physical, chemical and biological indicators of healthy nearshore conditions.

Heyvaert is a limnologist and acting senior director of the Center for Watersheds and Environmental Sustainability at the Desert Research Institute. His fields of interest include biogeochemistry, paleolimnology and watershed management. He has worked for many years on water quality issues in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
