Tahoe Chamber mixer raises funds for two local nonprofits
ABOUT THE RECIPIENTS
Bread & Broth’s mission is to feed those less fortunate in South Lake Tahoe. It provides a hot, well-balanced meal free of charge to all who come through their doors. No limits exist regarding degree of need, race, and/or religious beliefs. Bread & Broth has been in South Tahoe since 1989 and is completely run by volunteers. The Bread & Broth 4 Kids program supplies 103 kids in South Lake Tahoe with seven meals and four snacks for the weekend when they normally wouldn’t have the means to eat. Volunteers have already prepared over 1,500 meals this year. Despite their continued efforts, more than 300 kids in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District would be eligible for such a program.
Christmas Cheer provides monthly staple and perishable food to low-income families referred by local social service agencies. It also offers donated, used clothing, shoes, toys and small household items. Supported by private donations and community fundraisers, Christmas Cheer also presents a community-wide distribution of Christmas dinner baskets and toys for each child at Christmas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE — On Thursday, Jan. 14, Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce held its annual Connect for a Cause mixer at Riva Grill. The event aimed to engage the business community in worthy causes that benefit the local area.
St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth 4 Kids and Christmas Cheer were chosen as recipients for this year’s event. The nonprofits received half the door costs and all proceeds from the raffle prize funds.
The mixer saw an attendance of more than 100 chamber members and non-members. St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth 4 Kids volunteers raised over $800 at the Chamber event. Attendees donated over 10 bags of food items toward both Bread & Broth and Christmas Cheer. Additionally, Tahoe Chamber donated almost $1,200 to the nonprofits from door sales.
“The money raised from the raffle alone will purchase two weeks of food for our weekend recipients,” said Diane Weidinger, Bread & Broth’s director. “These weekend meal programs have a positive impact on kids and are even proven to reduce behavioral problems on Monday at school.”
Weidinger said she hopes to continue St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth 4 Kids mission by one day providing for all 300-plus kids in the South Tahoe area that qualify for the program and eventually extending the service into summer months.
The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to developing, promoting and representing the South Shore business community. Its networking events are designed to celebrate and encourage local businesses toward common community goals.
