Tahoe South Restaurant Week starts at South Shore

If your New Year’s resolution was to eat out less in 2014, you may want to push the start date to February.

Tahoe South Restaurant Week starts today, offering old food favorites and new culinary creations at about 20 South Shore locations. The theme is “Made with Altitude”.

During the event, foodies will have the opportunity to visit a number of local restaurants to try different cuisine both on and off the regular menu.

“Tahoe South Restaurant Week is an incredible opportunity to showcase some of the region’s best wine and food along with our sustainable offerings,” Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, said in a press release.

Some restaurants will feature pre-fixe menus and specially priced foods, while others will highlight a signature dish.

Boathouse on the Pier will be offering wild boar, pan seared salmon and New York steak — items that will only be available on the Restaurant Week menu, Chef Mike Ryan said.

“We wanted to do something other restaurants weren’t doing,” he said.

Guests can choose from one of the new entrees if they decide to go with the $38 four-course special. It’s not a bad price, Ryan said, especially when considering that some entrees run more than $30 alone at the restaurant.

“Hopefully it brings people in,” he said. “This is a good deal.”

The Beacon Bar & Grill will also be offering a menu created for Restaurant Week, General Manager Dan Beermann said. Petite filet mignon, seafood cioppino and stuffed pork chop are just a few of the items that will be available on a four-course pre-fixe menu.

Beerman said the stuffed pork chop is a personal favorite.

“Our menu here,” he said of the Restaurant Week selection, “it’s a cross-section of some of our best menu options.”

Ultimately, the event is a great way to bring additional exposure to local chefs and excellent culinary offerings, said Georgette Riley, marketing manager for Tahoe South.

“We really have the opportunity to showcase the cuisine available,” she said.

Tahoe South Restaurant Week is a new event that’s partnering with California Restaurant Month for the first time. Similar events to Restaurant Week have been held in South Shore, but none have been in conjunction with state’s event.

The local event ends Jan. 17, but organizers suspect it will be back next year — thanks to a strong community response.

“Given the interest level from our local restaurants,” Riley said, “I expect this to be the first of many.”
