Lodging association looks at TOT

The city’s transient occupancy tax, or TOT, tops the agenda for the South Lake Tahoe Lodging Association Board of Directors meeting on Thursday.

The meeting begins as 9:30 a.m. at the Super 8 Motel, 3600 Lake Tahoe Blvd. The conference room is located behind the main motel building.

The association is looking for an explanation of how the TOT works, “who gets it and how they use it,” association President Pete Mac Roberts said.

The city collects TOT from all lodging properties in the city including hotels, motels and vacation rentals. Its use is of particular concern to the association because the tax both originates from the customers of the lodging industry and is partly used to promote tourism, which benefits lodging properties.

Currently, of the 10 percent tax – or 12 percent from redevelopment areas – 2 percent is reserved for tourism promotions, mostly through the bistate Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, Lake Tahoe Airport and South Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce. The rest goes into the city’s general fund and for redevelopment bonding.

Other topics on the lodging association agenda include reports from officials from both Allegiant Air and Tahoe Air on how lodging owners can help promote the new airlines by including information with confirmations and participating in package promotions.

The lodging meetings also include a variety of reports from business and government organizations on topics of interest to the industry.
