SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Douglas County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue volunteers located a 19-year-old man early who became separated from friends while skiing out of bounds at Heavenly Mountain Resort Sunday.

The Dallas, Texas, man was unable to locate a pair of friends after the group hiked to ski terrain underneath the resort’s gondola, according to a Douglas County Sheriff’s deputy report. The men allegedly crossed several ski resort boundaries during the hike.

After becoming separated from his friends, the man struck a tree and became stuck in a tree well, an area at the base of a tree where snow does not accumulate.

He was stuck in the tree well for about an hour before he was able to free his left ski from the snow. After escaping the tree well, the man waited for rescuers because of poor weather and his lack of familiarity with the resort, according to the report.

Sheriff’s deputies received a report of a lost skier around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and contacted him at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe.

The man said he did not initially realize he was out of bounds because he was unfamiliar with the resort. The deputy issued the man a citation for skiing out of bounds. The skier’s injuries are not included in the report.
