Lovell is named woman of the year for Senate district
South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Kathay Lovell was named woman of the year for the California Senate’s 1st District, Sen. Dave Cox announced Monday.
“The work Kathay has done on behalf of the people of the Tahoe Basin is extraordinary,” Cox said in a statement. “Kathay is dedicated to her community and family. I admire her commitment and sense of duty to serve.”
During the Angora fire, Lovell demonstrated poise and leadership in responding to the needs of the community, Cox said.
“Lovell won the admiration and respect of elected officials and members of the community for her guidance and resourcefulness as mayor during this disaster,” Cox noted.
Lovell said she is humbled by the recognition.
“I’m very touched by his recommendation,” she said. “It’s quite an honor and one of those very special lifetime moments.”
Lovell, 48, has served five years on the South Lake Tahoe City Council, twice as mayor.
She was joined in Sacramento for the ceremony by her husband, Lt. Les Lovell of the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department.
