LT Marathon supports Girls Basketball

The Lake Tahoe Marathon recently purchased a

$1,000 cup of coffee at the Alpina Coffee House in South Lake Tahoe on behalf of the South Lake Tahoe High School Girls Basketball. This donation was made in an effort to help the girls raise money for new uniforms, and with other community donations, it looks like the team will be playing in style this season.

“These girls all work really hard on and off the court,” said Les Wright, Lake Tahoe Marathon race director and former South Tahoe Girls Basketball coach. “These uniforms are a way to show appreciation for all the hard work they have put into school and basketball.”

The grandeur of the country’s largest Alpine lake is taken in on foot as the eighth annual Lake Tahoe Marathon winds through the Tahoe Basin, climbing to points as high as 6,800 feet Oct. 11.

Considered one of the nation’s most beautiful runs, the Lake Tahoe Marathon attracts world-class and recreational athletes to participate in a 26.2 mile run starting at Commons Beach in Tahoe City early Saturday morning with runners heading down the West Shore to the finish line in South Lake Tahoe.

In addition to the Marathon, other Saturday races include a Wheelchair Marathon, Marathon Relay, Half Marathon and 10K Run. For the most experienced athletes, the third annual Tahoe Triple (formerly the Ultra 3 Day Stage Marathon) kicks off Oct. 9, wrapping around the entire lake to meet up with Saturday Marathoners for the final day of this grueling but breathtaking ultra race. Also starting on Thursday is the

event’s first-ever triathlon that features long-distance kayaking, cycling and running components. Conversely, for the short distance runners, a 5K Race is scheduled for the morning of Oct. 12 at Valhalla Historic Estates in South Lake Tahoe. A free Kids’ Fun Run, sponsored by the South Lake Tahoe Optimist Club, will follow the 5K event. All kids will receive a medal and lunch at the finish line.
