LTCC Phase 2 South is under way

Lake Tahoe Community College’s Phase 2 South project is well under way.

Under Proposition 1 A, the college received state construction funds last year to build a new cafeteria and gymnasium.

These projects will increase the size of the college tremendously, LTCC officials said. The outside gross square footage of Phase 2 South, which includes the cafeteria, gymnasium and a remodel for the business services offices, totals 37,441 square feet, Vice President of Business Services Jon Stephens said.

“There are three components,” Stephens said. “The physical education building, which is 26,000 square feet, has all of the structural steel up now. You can see the shape of the roof. It’s all been winterized already.”

The new gymnasium will be approximately three times the size of the college’s old gym, President Guy Lease said over the summer. It will house physical education and dance classes, a cardiovascular lab, free weights and other workout equipment and full-length basketball, volleyball and badminton courts.

Most of the columns for the culinary arts building are erected and Stephens said workers likely will begin installing steel next week.

In addition to feeding hungry students, the cafeteria also will serve as a home base for the culinary arts program.

Stephens said the projects are progressing ahead of schedule and may be finished before the official completion date of November 2002.
