LTCC plans summer Wilderness Institute
The Lake Tahoe Community College Tahoe Wilderness Institute Backcountry program is an eight-day interdisciplinary learning adventure. With wilderness as both subject and classroom, participants study geology, literature, art, mountaineering, biology and backcountry navigation. The institute’s hand-on, cooperative approach fosters a holistic understanding of the natural surroundings.
A kick-off on-campus orientation is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. July 12 at the community college. A one-day on-campus orientation will take place from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 13, mandatory equipment check will be from 1 to 5 p.m. July 14, and seven days in the backcountry will be from July 15 through July 21.
The institute welcomes all ages. Participants should be prepared for a high-elevation backpacking experience with daily hiking distances ranging from two- to- seven miles and elevation gains and losses up to 2,000 vertical feet.
Participants must provide their own backpacking gear. The institute provides all meals. Safety is of prime importance and emergency medical technicians will be present. This is an academic program and requires full student participation.
