Man dies in auto accident

A 26-year-old man from Fairoaks Calif. died shortly before 7 p.m. Monday night in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 50, one-half mile east of the Alder Creek bridge.

Christopher O’Connor was traveling westbound from South Lake Tahoe when he attempted to pass another car on a curve in a no-passing zone.

O’Connor’s black 1998 Camaro hit a white 1999 Chevy Blazer driven by Robert Wiley, 36, of Carson City, in the eastbound lane, sending the Camero down the embankment on the south side of the highway.

O’Connor was ejected from the car as it fell down the slope. He was found on the rocks at the bank of the American River. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The car came to a stop on its roof, and a passenger in the car – Michelle Myers, 27, of Citrus Heights – was suspended upside down by her seat belt.

Myers was taken by helicopter to Sutter-Roseville Hospital in Roseville Calif. with head trauma. She was listed in fair condition on Tuesday.

Wiley was treated and released from Marshall Hospital in Placerville for neck, hip, and knee injuries.

A California Highway Patrol spokesman said witnesses reported O’Connor was speeding and driving recklessly.

It is unknown if O’Connor was under the influence of alcohol.
