Man dies in highway accident

Michael Schneider

A South Lake Tahoe man was killed early Saturday morning when his 1984 BMW flipped several times on U.S. Highway 50 near South Lake Tahoe Airport.

Witnesses reported that the victim, Patrick Azevedo, 32, was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed shortly after 1 a.m., the California Highway Patrol reported.

The driver reportedly drifted into the on-coming car before swerving back into the westbound lane and losing control after the two vehicles passed each other, according to a CHP report.

One witness said Azevedo’s vehicle hit a stop sign after losing control and flipped several times.

Witnesses and emergency personnel responding to the accident reported Azevedo had no pulse.

Emergency personnel reported detecting the odor of alcohol. However, a toxicological analysis that should determine the driver’s blood alcohol level, if any, will not be completed for several days.
