Man falls off jump on dirt bike

An 18-year-old man was transported to Washoe Medical Center by helicopter Monday for suspected back and leg injuries after falling off a 20-foot jump on his dirt bike at the Twin Peaks off-highway vehicle trails.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Department sent two engines to the call, which came in at 2 p.m.

Otherwise, law enforcement reported a quiet Fourth of July weekend, peppered with DUI arrests and frequent reports of illegal fireworks.

“We just try to confiscate what they have,” said South Lake Tahoe Fire Capt. Fred Vermillion.

“The more we are out there visible, the more people will keep quiet (with fireworks),” he said.

The fire department also responded to a small fire in the Tahoe Valley neighborhood, in which a child of 5 or 6 years old lit some pine needles using, investigators suspect, a cigarette lighter and lighter fluid.

The fire grew to 10 by 10 feet by the time responders arrived.

Vermillion said parents should always keep a close eye on kids.

“They get curious (and) they want to play with anything they can get their hands on,” he said.

In other news, the California Highway Patrol arrested eight people for driving under the influence in Truckee on Sunday. Two DUI arrests were made in South Shore.
