Man found in lake believed a suicide death

David Anthony Nygaardo left his jacket and shoes on Nevada Beach and walked into the frigid, numbing water of Lake Tahoe. His body was discovered early Saturday morning by a Stateline couple.

Douglas County Sheriff’s investigators said it appears the 37-year-old San Francisco man took his own life.

“We believe he died sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning,” said Sgt. Detective Tim Minister. “It doesn’t appear his death was related to any criminal event, but we won’t have a final determination until we get the toxicology reports and the results of the autopsy.”

The couple was out on a early morning stroll when they first saw the man’s clothing on the beach. Looking out at the lake the couple saw Nygaardo floating about 10 yards offshore at the southwest corner of the beach, investigators said.

The sheriff’s department was notified and officials began securing the area around 11 a.m. Saturday. Minister said it seems that Nygaardo possibly traveled from the Bay Area to South Shore by bus, but he had no information on how long Nygaardo might have been in the area before his death.
