Man gets 7 years for DUI death

Christina Proctor

A Sacramento man was sentenced Friday to seven years in a California state prison for causing the death of a Yerington woman in a Christmas Day head-on car crash.

Mark Gregory Rodriguez, 34, pleaded guilty June 5, to gross vehicular manslaughter for the accident that killed Ann Marie Rowley and left her husband, Mark Rowley, with a broken arm and fractured kneecap.

The couple was traveling home after spending Christmas Eve and most of Christmas Day with Ann’s family in Sacramento. Around 11:40 p.m., as the Rowleys neared Echo Summit on U.S. Highway 50, Rodriguez’s Ford Taurus crossed the yellow line and entered their lane striking the couple’s car.

Authorities said Rodriguez’s blood alcohol level was .19. The legal limit in California is .08.

Ann Rowley, 33, died a little more than two weeks later at Washoe Medical Center. She never regained consciousness after the crash.

The couple had been married a year and a half.

When Rodriguez entered his plea Mark Rowley said it was most important to him that Rodriguez change his behavior.

“I want to know he will never do this again, and when do you really know that?” Rowley said.
